This page sets out where the information behind our Ford VIN decoder comes from and, just as importantly, where its limits are. A good decoder is honest about both.

The structure we use to read a VIN is based on the international standard for Vehicle Identification Numbers, which has governed how the 17 character VIN is laid out since the early 1980s. On top of that standard, each manufacturer assigns its own codes for engines, body styles and plants, and Ford has used different schemes in different markets and eras. Our interpretation draws on Ford’s own coding conventions and on long established public references for how those codes map to real engines and models.

There are real limits to what any VIN can tell you, and it is better to know them up front. A VIN records how a vehicle was built, not what has happened to it since. It will not tell you the mileage, whether the car has had accident repairs, how many owners it has had, or whether money is still owed on it. Those facts live in other records, such as vehicle history reports and official registers, not in the VIN.

There are also cases where a VIN may not resolve cleanly. Vehicles built for certain markets, very low volume or specialist models, and cars from before the 17 character standard can carry codes that are not part of the mainstream Ford schemes, so some positions may be reported in general terms rather than exact detail. Where that happens, we would rather tell you plainly than invent a specific answer.

How Does a VIN Code Work?

2. Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) - Characters 4-9

3. Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) - Characters 10-17

This section reveals the model year (10th character), manufacturing plant (11th), and serial number (12-17).
