How it works

The VIN is decoded by the NHTSA vPIC database to get the year, make and model. That model is matched to the U.S. EPA fuel-economy records, you confirm the exact engine and transmission, and the combined city/highway rating is read straight from EPA. Fuel cost is then simple arithmetic: yearly miles divided by miles-per-gallon gives gallons used, multiplied by your fuel price.

What the numbers mean

The combined rating blends EPA city and highway figures the way most drivers actually mix them. Your annual cost uses the mileage and price you enter, so it reflects your driving, not an assumption. The EPA reference line shows the agency’s own annual estimate, which always assumes 15,000 miles a year, so you can compare.

Methodology and sources

Vehicle identification comes from the NHTSA vPIC VIN database. Fuel-economy ratings come from the U.S. Department of Energy and EPA service at fueleconomy.gov, which covers vehicles from 1984 on. We do not adjust or estimate the MPG; we display exactly what EPA published for the variant you select.

What this tool will not do

It will not quote insurance, resale value or total cost of ownership, because those depend on your location, driving record and the used-car market rather than the VIN. For fuel economy on vehicles built before 1984, EPA has no data, so the tool cannot help there. Real-world mileage also varies with terrain, load, weather and driving style, so treat the EPA rating as a fair benchmark rather than a promise.
