How to Read a Ford VIN

Reading a Ford VIN is a skill anyone can learn in a few minutes, and it is the single most useful thing you can do before trusting a car’s description. This guide walks through the number from start to finish, with the same logic our decoder uses, so you can understand exactly what each part means.

Start by finding the number. On a modern Ford it sits at the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side, on the certification label inside the driver’s door jamb, and on the registration and insurance paperwork. The first thing worth doing is checking that those locations agree, because a mismatch is a warning sign.

A Ford built from 1981 onward has 17 characters. Read them in three blocks. The first three characters tell you who built the car and where, so a number starting with 1FA is a Ford passenger car from the United States, while WF0 is a Ford from Europe. The next five characters, positions four to eight, describe the car itself, and the most useful of these is the engine, which is where a base model is set apart from a V8 or a turbocharged version. The ninth character is a check digit, and if you want a quick sanity test, a VIN whose check digit does not add up is either mistyped or suspect.

The last eight characters are about the individual car. Position ten is the model year, position eleven is the assembly plant, and the final six are the unique build number. Once you can pick out the manufacturer, the engine, the model year and the plant, you have read the most important parts of the VIN.

Cars built before 1981 work differently. They use shorter factory numbers where, typically, a single digit gives the model year and a letter gives the plant, so you read them with references specific to that era rather than the modern method. If you are unsure which applies, the length of the number is the clue, as a 17 character number always follows the modern standard.
