What you get

The specification is grouped into engine, drivetrain, weight and brakes, where it was built, and factory safety features. Engine details such as displacement, cylinders and horsepower are usually present. Transmission is often not encoded in the VIN, so it may show as “Not reported by NHTSA” — that is a limit of the data, not a fault with your car.

Why some fields are blank

NHTSA fills each field only from what the manufacturer submitted for that VIN pattern. A blank means the database has no value for that item, not that the feature is absent. That is why we label empty engine or transmission fields plainly instead of hiding them.

Methodology and sources

All data comes from the NHTSA vPIC VIN database, the same source used by safety regulators. We display the decoded values exactly as returned. To validate the VIN itself first, use our VIN check-digit tool.

What this tool will not tell you

How Does a VIN Code Work?

2. Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) - Characters 4-9

This section provides details about the vehicle's model, engine type, body style, and includes a check digit (9th character).

3. Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) - Characters 10-17

This section reveals the model year (10th character), manufacturing plant (11th), and serial number (12-17).

Examples: "Y in the 10th spot = 2000", "A = 2010", "L = 2020"
