How Does a VIN Code Work?

A VIN is divided into three main sections, each providing specific information about the vehicle.

1. World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) - Characters 1-3

This section identifies the manufacturer and country of origin.

2. Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) - Characters 4-9

This section provides details about the vehicle's model, engine type, body style, and includes a check digit (9th character).

3. Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) - Characters 10-17

This section reveals the model year (10th character), manufacturing plant (11th), and serial number (12-17).
