How We Decode Ford VINs

This page explains exactly how the Ford VIN decoder on this site reads a Vehicle Identification Number, what each part of the number tells us, and what we can and cannot show you. Being clear about the method matters, because a VIN decoder is only as trustworthy as the logic behind it.

A Ford VIN built from 1981 onward has 17 characters, and those characters follow an international standard that splits them into three blocks. The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, which tell us who built the vehicle and in which country. Characters four through eight describe the vehicle itself, including the body style, the restraint system and the engine. The ninth character is a check digit, a value calculated from all the other characters that lets us catch typing mistakes and altered numbers. The tenth character is the model year, the eleventh is the assembly plant, and the final six characters are the sequential build number unique to that one vehicle.

When you enter a VIN, the decoder reads each of these positions in turn. It identifies the manufacturer and country from the first three characters, works out the model year from position ten, and interprets the engine and body information from the middle block using Ford’s published coding for the relevant market and era. It also recalculates the check digit and compares it with position nine, which is the single best quick test of whether a VIN has been entered correctly or tampered with.

For Ford vehicles built before 1981 the logic is different. Those cars use shorter factory identification numbers with their own layout, where a single digit often gives the model year and a letter gives the assembly plant, so we read them with period specific references rather than the modern 17 character method.

What the decoder shows you is the information that is encoded in the VIN itself: the manufacturer, the country and plant of assembly, the model year, and the engine and body details that Ford built into the number. What it does not show, because that information is simply not part of the VIN, is the ownership history, the mileage record, or whether the vehicle has been in an accident.
