What the decoder shows you
A Ford VIN is not random. The first three characters identify the manufacturer and country, such as 1FA for a Ford car from the United States or WF0 for Ford of Europe. The middle characters describe the vehicle, including the engine, which is where a V8 is set apart from a V6, an EcoBoost or a diesel. The ninth character is a check digit that flags a mistyped or altered number, the tenth is the model year and the eleventh is the plant. The decoder turns all of that into a plain result you can actually use.
How to use it
Find the VIN at the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side, on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb, or on the registration paperwork, then type or paste it into the decoder. Compare the result with the advertisement when you are buying a used Ford: the year, engine and body should all line up. If they do not, that is the first thing worth investigating.
What it does not cover
A VIN records how a car was built, not what has happened to it since. It will not show mileage, owners, accident history or finance. For that, use an official recall check such as the NHTSA recall lookup and a reputable vehicle history provider alongside this decoder.

How Does a VIN Code Work?
