How it works

Your VIN is decoded to the year, make and model, then we pull every owner complaint on file at NHTSA for that vehicle and group them by the part involved. The most-reported components rise to the top, so you can see at a glance whether owners are complaining about, say, the transmission, the electrical system or the brakes.

What a complaint is (and is not)

A complaint is an unverified report an owner filed with NHTSA. A high count can mean a real pattern, but it is also affected by how many of that model were sold — a popular truck will always collect more complaints than a rare one. Treat the component breakdown as a guide to where to look, then check our recall check and safety ratings for official action.

Methodology and sources

Vehicle identification comes from NHTSA vPIC. Complaints come from the official NHTSA complaints service. We only count and group what NHTSA publishes; we do not add opinions or scores.

What this tool will not tell you

It cannot tell you whether a problem was ever fixed, or whether your individual car is affected — complaints are filed by year, make and model, not by full VIN. It is also not a reliability ranking; for that, manufacturers and testers use much larger datasets. Use this as a starting point for questions to ask a mechanic or seller.

How Does a VIN Code Work?

A VIN is divided into three main sections, each providing specific information about the vehicle.

2. Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) - Characters 4-9

This section reveals the model year (10th character), manufacturing plant (11th), and serial number (12-17).
