How the star rating works

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash-tests vehicles and scores them from one to five stars, where five is the safest. There are separate scores for a frontal crash, a side crash and rollover resistance, and an overall score that combines them. Not every vehicle is tested, so older, low-volume or heavy-duty models may show “Not rated” — that means no test was done, not that the vehicle is unsafe.

The safety picture beyond the stars

Stars only cover crash tests. This tool also pulls the counts of open recalls, owner-filed complaints and any federal investigations for your vehicle, because a car can earn five stars and still have recalls you should act on. Methodology and sources

The VIN is decoded by NHTSA vPIC to get the year, make and model, then matched to the NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings program. Ratings, complaint counts, recall counts and investigation counts all come from the official NHTSA ratings service. We display the figures exactly as published.

What this tool will not tell you

A star rating applies to a body style and drivetrain, not to your individual car’s condition or history. “Not rated” simply means NHTSA never tested that configuration. The complaint count reflects what owners reported to NHTSA; it is not a reliability score and is affected by how many of that model are on the road.
